Restaurants are an eternal industry. Every town has at least one, whether mom and pop or corporate chain. As popular as the investment is, there aren't too many "how to" books for getting into the industry. Robin Gagnon '95 MBA saw that void, and recently wrote to fill it. She and her husband, Greg, are the authors of Appetite for Acquisition, which is described as the "definitive guide for anyone looking to enter the restaurant industry."

Appetite for AcquisitionThe book has received great reviews, and was recently nominated for a 2012 Small Business Book Award in the category of startups. The contest includes online voting, and the Gagnons ask for your support.

Six out of every ten startup restaurants fail. Your restaurant should not be one of them. So say the authors of "Appetite for Acquisition."

Veteran restaurant brokers Eric and Robin Gagnon present their guide to buying an existing restaurant so you can beat the odds. The book aims to help readers know how to acquire a restaurant in a way that is less painful, more profitable, and delivers a better return on their investment.

It contains hands-on practical advice and real-life examples, and shows you how to avoid common pitfalls and navigate your way to buying a restaurant.

Votes can be submitted daily until February 15. Vote here.

Robin Gagnon is a member of the advisory board for the Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship, and a member emerti of the Walker College Business Advisory Council. She is owner of We Sell Restaurants, which is an "industry leader in selling restaurants and food related businesses, franchise re-sales, and site location for the food service industry."

As part of a recent promotion event for the book, Robin Gagnon appeared on "The Donna Show," a radio program in Atlanta.

Dean Sanders '86 MGT is home. The lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves - and a financial planner as a civilian - was among the last troops to leave Iraq as combat operations there ended late last year. He had two tours. During the first, in 2006, he helped train Iraqi secuirty forces. The second a couple years later was spent working as a civil affairs officer.

Sanders recently spoke to the Sanford Herald about his time serving overseas, and how he said it changed him.

SandersSanders was stationed in Iraq during "the surge" of 2007, when President George W. Bush deployed 30,000 additional troops. By the end of his first deployment, Sanders received a Bronze Star, and the Military Transition Team members were all awarded Combat Action Badges.

When he returned home for the first time, Sanders said he felt like a different person in many ways than when he left 15 months earlier.

"I recall very distinctly talking to my wife on the phone and telling her, 'This deployment has affected me,'" Sanders said. ...

After dedicating two deployments to the war effort in Iraq, Sanders said he remains invested in the country's future, but he is happy to be home.

"I'm grateful when people see me in uniform, they don't hesitate to say, 'Thank you for your service,'" Sanders said. "My response to that is always that it's an honor and a privilege to serve."

John Divine '11 FIN recently accepted a position as a loan documentation analyst with the Charlotte office of Grandbridge Real Estate Capital, a full-service commercial and multifamily mortgage banking company. He also recently made his debut on the The Motley Fool Blog Network with a post entitled, "Disproving the Efficient Market Hypothesis: Starting with Tickers that Begin with "A"."

Motley Fool logoThe article was Divine's attempt to "identify some of the opportunities that current market inefficiencies have created."

All investors who believe they can beat the market or spot an undervalued stock believe in market inefficiency. Sites like the Motley Fool would not exist if at some level this implicit assumption was not made. So without further ado, allow me to identify some of the opportunities that current market inefficiencies have created. Companies that begin with the letter “A” seem like a good place to start:

He focused on three companies - Amazon.com, Abbott Laboratories and Apple.

DeFerie

One of the newest companies added to the NASDAQ rang in its debut on the stock market listing. Literally.

Suzanne DeFerie '79 ACC, CEO of ASB Bancorp, Inc., rang the closing bell to end trading Monday. The event marked the company's addition to the exchange back in October. ASB Bancorp is beleived to be the first Asheville-based company to enjoy the honor.

A group of bank management team members and board members visited the NASDAQ Marketsite in New York’s Times Square for the bell ringing and photos. The ASB group gathered around a podium after company President and CEO Suzanne DeFerie delivered brief remarks in which she thanked customers, shareholders and bank employees.

The event, which is choreographed by a professional event planner, is designed to get the company exposure. Some television networks broadcast the bell ringing, including CNBC and Fox Business News, and the company’s logo is shown on NASDAQ’s giant tower outside.

ASB Bancorp Inc. is the holding company for Asheville Savings Bank. She joined the company in 1991 as chief financial officer. She was named CEO in 2008

RMI students at CMS

RMI students Ryne Herring, Cameron Annas and JP DeKemper prepare to take a lap around the Charlotte Motor Speedway track.

One Walker College student won a pit crew competition, and three others joined him for a quick lap around the track, during the recent 114th Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina convention in Concord. All four Risk Management & Insurance (RMI) students from Appalachian State participated in many of the educational sessions during the four-day event, July 14-17. They also networked with Insurance professionals from across the state and mingled with peers from ECU and UNCC.

Since it was held near Charlotte Motor Speedway, the convention - known as the "Big I" convention - had a NASCAR theme. One of the highlights was a NASCAR pit crew tire challenge. Students and young agents created 5-person teams and trained changing tires on NASCAR driver Kyle Busch’s No. 18 car. Appalachian student Cameron Annas was on the winning team, changing a tire in less than 12 seconds!

Saturday night the students enjoyed rides around the CMS track in a pace car traveling more than 110 miles per hour.

Another benefit of the convention was the networking time with Insurance professionals, many of whom were also Appalachian graduates. Ray Tedder '91 FIN was a featured speaker at the Young Agents opening session, during which he shared insights from his experience within the insurance industry. It was quickly obvious to the students how many Appalachian alumni were in attendance as exhibitors and attendees when they offered to put “Big A” stickers on the nametags. One of the group noted seeing the “Big A” everywhere they went at the “Big I” convention.

The Independent Insurance Agents Association of North Carolina (IIANC) helped establish the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center within Walker College in 1988. This group, and its member agents, annually contribute to the Brantley Center and help provide valuable scholarship and financial support and opportunities to the RMI students.

From left, Brantley Center assistant director Greg Langdon; RMI students Ross Karcher and JP DeKemper, Ray Tedder '91, RMI student Cameron Annas, and RMI Society faculty advisor Dr. Karen Epermanis.

There's nothing like a great afternoon on the links with fellow Appalachian State supporters, followed by a big meal and dozens of door prizes. That's the atmosphere of the annual Beroth Scholarship Golf Tournament at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. Alumni, friends and supporters of the University and Walker College are invited to field a team in the captain's choice tournament, schedule for September 14.

Appalachian State Chancellor Kenneth Peacock is expected to play, as is Walker College Dean Randy Edwards. The tournament will begin with a shotgun 8 a.m. start and end with a meal and door prizes at mid-afternoon. Tanglewood is a beautiful course, and the event is well attended each year.

All money raised from the tournament provides financial support for student scholarships, faculty research and professorships. That figures has been around $35,000 for the past number of years. For more information on fielding a team or sponsoring a hole, download the entry form [PDF] or contact Walker College Development Director Rob Hudspeth.
