Jeff Fissel '06 MKT is executive director of Rural Hill, a historic site in Huntersville. Last summer, a focused effort was created to drive more business to the self-described "Nature Preserve, Field Trip Destination, Cultural Events Site, Farm, and all around great place to get away from one’s daily stresses in life." According to the Charlotte Observer, the plan is seeing results.

On April 30, though, Fissel will mark his territory (pardon the pun) with Bark in the Park, a festival for dogs and their owners that he lured away from Metrolina Expo.

Then on May 14, Fissel and his staff will serve up the inaugural North Carolina Brewers & Music Festival, which will feature national acts such as Chatham County Line, local bands including the New Familiars, and beers from perhaps 15 to 20 N.C. breweries.

Then, on Aug. 27, roughly 5,000 adventure seekers will descend on Rural Hill for North Carolina's first Warrior Dash, a muddy obstacle course race that's part of a popular national series of nontraditional running events.

Fissel was hired by Rural Hill in July 2010 as events director. Four months later he was promoted to executive director

Eric Church '00 MKT released his debut country single, "How 'Bout You," in spring 2006. His debut album followed in July. After some successful tour dates, his second album, "Carolina, was released in 2008. He later played a concert at his alma mater

churchjersey

Last night Church had another carrer milestone. He was named "Top new solo vocalist" during the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards from Las Vegas. He also performed live during the show, singing "Smoke a Little Smoke."

The Hickory Daily Record profiled the Granite Falls native prior to the show.

Church attended college at Appalachian State University in Boone. His love of music steamrolled.

“I worked hard on my guitar playing and songwriting, he said. We started a band called the Mountain Boys. Playing five to six nights a week, I got comfortable in front of every kind of audience. Some of them got pretty rowdy. I learned not to let it bother me.”

Eager to move to Nashville, Church was convinced by his dad to remain at ASU and earn a marketing degree. Then, he packed up and moved to Music City.

“I didn’t realize how hard it would be. I was 22 with that I’ve-got-the-world-on-a-string mentality,” he said. “I had a lot of youthful exuberance. Dad financed my first six months. After that, I took a job with the Home Shopping Network answering phones.

“My favorite memories of home: Family and friends, buddies and basketball, music … the small town atmosphere, where everybody knows everybody, seemed like a thing of the past. But, I wouldn’t quit.”

Adcock

The most recent issue of Appalachiain Today is now online. Among its many stories is a feature on Brandon Adcock '06 MKT, co-owner of Direct Digital. The multi-million dollar business is an Internet-based vitamin and supplement company with its headquarters in Charlotte. As he left Appalachian State, Adcock didn't expect to become an entrepreneur, according to the article (page 37).

“I never really thought of myself as an entrepreneur or someone with an entrepreneurial spirit. I have always done different things ever since I was a kid. I just never thought I would start my own business,” Adcock said. “I had an idea, was at the right place at the right time and took risks." ...

Adcock gained experience in search engine marketing while in college, teaching himself methods in which companies can improve their visibility on search engines for specific consumer searches. He took lessons learned while at Lowe’s to start his own business providing marketing solutions for vitamin and supplement companies.

“The business did phenomenally well, better than I expected it to,” Adcock said. “After nine or 10 months, I decided I could do a better job and create better products that were more effective than those I was working with.”

Adcock, along with his Direct Digital managing partner Paul Reichelt, will be speaking at the upcoming Young Entrepreneurs Symposium, scheduled for February 23. They will address their personal story of how they have been able to generate tens of millions of dollars in sales in a year. Register online to attend

Bunn CambodiaGraham Bunn ‘03 MGT, a one-time reality tv contestant who operates a charitable business in New York, is putting actions to his words. He is now in Cambodia, working with Wine to Water to dig a well his company, 46NYC, raised money specifically to build. On Day 3 of the trip, the well was finished. It will benefit Basak Primary School, according to the Wine to Water blog.

We finished our second well today at Basak Primary School. The school typically has about 300 students, many of which we were able to meet, even though they let out for the summer yesterday. Having the children there gave us an opportunity to really connect with the beneficiaries of the well and we enjoyed playing and laughing with them. It was definitely the hottest day we’ve had in the field so far, but everyone was eager and excited to pitch in, and despite a few kinks in the drilling, the well was completed this evening. This particular well was made possible by donations from our partners at 46NYC, and it was exciting to have one of the founders, Graham Bunn, on the ground with us to witness the installation.

Graham also recently uploaded a video to youtube.com discussing the well, and the work it involved.

46NYC was founded by Bunn and Hal Kivette ’06 MKT. The two were profiled in the Fall 2009 issue of Appalachian Today. Bunn was also a speaker at the 2009 Young Entrepreneurs Symposium held on campus. US Magazine has a photo posted on its website promoting Bunn’s work (photo top right). You can follow Bunn on twitter.

At age 6, Blair Minton ’89 MKT found a love of his life. NASCAR. The affection bloomed when he attended his first race, the 1973 Daytona 500. It carried over through his years as an Appalachian State student, and following graduation it became a career aspiration.

CupScene.com posted a profile of Minton this week, using him as a metaphor for the hard-work and sacrifice needed to achieve one’s career goals. He started working in the banking business, but eventually left it to find opportunity anywhere near a race track. He finally got his toe in the car door via a salesjob with an apparel company.

“I was calling on NASCAR teams trying to earn part of their apparel business,” Blair said. “After I while, I would let my contacts at the teams know that I wanted to get involved in the sport. Through a friend, I was introduced to Jeff Gordon. He told me to contact his PR rep, Jon Edwards. I spent a year working with Jon learning the PR side of the sport. It was a great experience. Jon is generally regarded as one of the best in the business so his expertise was invaluable.”

With a year of experience under his belt, Minton began looking for a permanent spot on a team. With his penchant for cold calling thanks to his former career as an investment banker, Blair knew he couldn’t give up and became a fixture at many teams as he looked for a full time role.

Then in the beginning of 2006, he got the break he was looking for.

Driver Martin Truex Jr. needed a PR rep. Eventually Minton got the job. For three years he lived his dream. Then came the economic slowdown of 2009. He lost his job. He didn’t know what to do. Should he return to banking and finance? Or search for a new opportunity in a new garage?

He finally found his answer. He chose both.

A trip to the grocery store gave him the direction he needed. It was there that Minton ran into a client from his days in the financial services industry.

“He said, ‘Man, you should get back into the financial services business,” Blair remembered. “’You were the best broker I ever had.’ That’s when it hit me; I should reenter the business and concentrate on helping people in the NASCAR industry. …

That building process has resulted not only in a successful career around the sport for Blair, but he’s now able to give back to those he once worked side by side with in the NASCAR garage.

“I think that my clients respond well to me because I understand the world of NASCAR,” Blair said. “I understand what it’s like to go on the road for 34 or 35 weekends a year. I’ve been there. Most of these guys are too busy to spend hours every day tracking their investments. They need someone that can help them come up with a sound financial program and guide them in the right direction. They know that they’ve got someone working for them, that understands their lifestyle and the demand on their time.”

In its closing, the story notes Minton’s “been able to combine his talent for helping people make the right financial decisions with his passion for NASCAR.”
