cbsgraphicBrian Easter '98 ITOM and Adam Harrell '03 are two of the driving forces behind Socks4Life.com, a successful online socks outlet which has seen its sales skyrocket in the past few months. Sales have been so good, the company got a brief mention on the March 16 edition of the CBS Evening News.

Watch CBS Videos Online

The specific segment, which begins at 5:27, highlights various small business niches that have prospered during the current economic downturn. Socks4Life was sourced as having seen its profits increase 80% during 2007-08. A company press release has more details.

After issuing a press release about Socks4Life's remarkable growth in 2008, which was marked by an 80% increase in revenue during the calendar year, the Atlanta-based sock outlet was contacted by CBS to be interviewed for a segment on businesses that are continuing to grow in the tough economic environment.
Overall, the substantial improvement in sales over the last year was attained by meeting marketing and operational goals that drove brand, awareness, and demand. The shift to a new, more sophisticated ecommerce platform was also a significant milestone achieved during 2008.
Other factors driving sales and revenue included a robust search engine marketing program, implementing Google Checkout as a new payment option, coming up with fun and creative marketing campaigns such as awarding the "Made in America Man of the Year" award to Steven Colbert, and expanding several product lines, including the popular diabetic socks and boot socks offerings. NeboWeb, an award-winning web design company, powers Socks4Life's advertising and marketing programs and continues to help to push their growth in 2009.

The campus paper this week has more details on the company's response from the TV time.

Even though Socks4Life was only featured for a few seconds, Easter said the site shut down for 14 hours due to increased traffic.
As for starting a business, Easter said, "Do your homework. It's like that old expression, ‘measure twice, cut once.' You have to minimize your opportunity for failure."
